Abstract/Summary
Howkins and Harrison commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited to undertake a program of archaeological monitoring and recording as a condition of a scheduled monument consent for a replacement septic tank and associated soakaway. The site is located within the Scheduled Monument of Canons Ashby, relating to the remains of an Augustinian monastery, castle, associated settlement and field systems, post-medieval houses, gardens and parkland. There is limited evidence of earlier activity including a Bronze Age spearhead and Roman and Anglo-Saxon pottery. A single ditch was recorded, containing a small group of medieval and post-medieval pottery, corresponding with a recent boundary shown on Ordnance Survey mapping, as well as another undated ditch and a pit containing an animal burial.
