Abstract/Summary
A general strip measuring 21 x 21m was undertaken across the area of the dwelling footprint, this was followed by the excavation of strip foundations measuring 0.65m wide by 0.80m deep from the reduced level. The stratigraphy comprised of (101) a friable dark brown sandy silt topsoil up to 0.05m thick. This sealed (102), a friable dark orange silty sand subsoil up to 0.32m thick. This directly overlay the natural geology (103) which comprised of a stiff mid-yellowish orange sandy clay with frequent small to medium sub angular fragments of decayed ironstone. A pit measuring 1.6m x 2.5m was excavated to a depth of 1.5m for the installation of a septic tank. This was linked by a service trench measuring 62 m in length x 0.30m wide and up to 0.60m deep. The stratigraphy matched that recorded within the house footings. No archaeological features were present within the monitored area.
