Abstract/Summary

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at Naseby Road, Clipston, Northamptonshire. The site lies on the southern side of Clipston and occupies a plot on the north side of Naseby Road. One Scheduled Monument; Clipston medieval settlement and 19 Listed Buildings lie within the 500m HER search radius of the proposed development. There is limited evidence for prehistoric activity in the locality and no Roman remains are known. An early Anglo-Saxon funerary site lies to the south-east of the proposed development. Clipston was a thriving village during the medieval period which shifted from the north-west of the current settlement towards the south-east, taking advantage of the more sheltered position. The Scheduled Monument is characterised by the survival of numerous features such as crofts, toft, holloways, enclosures and areas of ridge and furrow. The southern end of one hollow way may be present at the eastern boundary of the site. The Visual Impact Assessment (VIA) included within this report concludes that the proposed development is expected to have a neutral effect and will not cause harm to Clipston medieval settlement. Cartographic evidence suggests that two buildings, two enclosures and a water pump were present on the site during the 19th century but the site remained as an open parcel of land for the remainder of the post-medieval period.
