Abstract/Summary

Presents a current example from the Council for British Archaeology's (CBA's) listed buildings casework: the grade II listed Cromley Road works in Rushden near Northampton, a shoe factory built between 1895 and 1900 for William Green and Son (known as Grenson). The design includes some distinctive features, particularly the oriel turret announcing the building at the corner of the site, although multiple extensions added as the factory expanded in the 20th century largely ignored the architectural quality of the original building. Grenson moved on from the site in 2013, and it is now proposed to convert the main building into apartments and replace the extensions with new housing. The CBA has generally welcomed the proposals. Both it and English Heritage have raised concerns for two ancillary buildings at the site, but the developers appear willing to negotiate regarding these elements.
