Abstract/Summary

In March 2009, Cotswold Archaeology (CA) was commissioned by Wilbraham Associates Ltd on behalf of Northall Developments to carry out an archaeological desk-based assessment of land at Long Barrow, Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire. The objective the assessment was to identify the nature and extent of the recorded archaeological resource within both the site and its immediate environs. The site consists of rough ground adjacent to Long Barrow road in the north of the village of Chipping Warden. A spread of building rubble currently covers much of the northern half of the site. No archaeological remains are recorded from the site and no previous invasive work has taken place. To the immediate east of the site lies Wallow Bank, a possible Neolithic long barrow. There is some potential for elements of this monument to extend into the eastern part of the site. There is evidence for activity within the area dating from the Bronze Age to the modern period, though the site was farmland from the medieval period until the construction of farm buildings in the 19th century. These were demolished in the 1980s and are probably represented by the spread of material currently on the site. The former farm buildings are likely to have impacted upon any buried archaeological features, the survival and potential value of which is not known. Any below-ground remains of the buildings themselves are considered to be of low archaeological value, at most.
