Abstract/Summary

The planned improvements to the public realm at both Abington Street and Fish Street were deemed to potentially impact on buried archaeological horizons. Monitoring of the excavation of the six deepest test pits was carried out but, apart from a limited undated soil partially exposed in the corner of one pits, the remainder were entirely excavated in deposits of nineteenth or twentieth century date. The work demonstrated the significant realignment of the southern edge of much of the frontage of Abington Street in places by several metres.
