Abstract/Summary
In July 2022, KDK Archaeology Ltd undertook a programme of Observation and Recording at 152-154 Watling Street, Towcester, Northamptonshire, during the building’s conversion to 15 one-bedroom flats. Nos. 152 & 154 Watling Street are a pair of buildings on the northeast side of Watling Street, which formerly housed the Towcester Conservative Club. Although no archaeological cut features were revealed, a dark earth deposit containing small fragments of Samian ware and oyster shell was observed to the east of the site. Similar dark, ashy deposits have been observed on a number of sites elsewhere in Towcester, and are thought to originate in urban occupation activity in the Roman era.
