Abstract/Summary

MOLA Northampton undertook archaeological works on land at Rothersthorpe Road, Kislingbury, Northamptonshire (NGR SP 69787 59088). The site comprised an area that measured approximately 0.94ha, located to the south of Kislingbury and to the east of Rothersthorpe Road. The work aimed to targeted known geophysical anomalies (Davies 2017) and further investigate archaeology recorded during previous evaluation works (Preece 2018). The evaluation works identified 24 ditches, over half of which were dated to the late Iron Age. The investigation identified a potential pit alignment that was presumably dated to the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age. During the middle and late Iron Age, an extensive farmstead complex developed, c3rd century BC, which was originally possibly a partly open settlement. Later phases of the farmstead was less open and included enclosures and boundary ditches that followed the same alignment as the earlier pit alignment. The farmstead remained in use until the late Iron Age period with no pottery dated after cAD1. After this the landscape was either abandoned or reverted to limited agricultural use. It is uncertain when the latter occurred as no pottery or other finds was recovered from two phases of field systems. There was a minor phase of possible medieval activity. This activity and the unphased field systems were in turn cut by medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow. Only a single modern ditch was recorded in the site.
