Abstract/Summary

This collection comprises a report, images, spreadsheets, GIS data and site records from a programme of archaeological strip, map and record scheme at Unit 26-28, The Bell Plantation, Watling Street, Towcester, Northamptonshire. Work was commissioned by Bell Plantation Ltd and carried out by Allen Archaeology Ltd between July and August 2020 as a condition of planning consent for the installation of a ground source heat pump. Following discussions with the Archaeological Advisor for North Northamptonshire Council and the client, the works were initially to comprise the monitoring of the stripping of the heat pipe trenches, with the ability to stop machining to allow appropriate archaeological investigation to take place. It became apparent on the first day that a significant volume of archaeology was being exposed. Following further discussion, an agreement was made to strip the footprint of the area of the heat pipe trenches and postpone the groundworks until the archaeological investigations were completed. The excavation revealed Roman activity at the site. The main period of activity appears to be early Roman, with evidence of quarrying, an enclosure ditch, several pits, ditches and human burials and cremations.
