Abstract/Summary
A programme of Archaeological Recording was undertaken by Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd at Welsh Road (hereafter the Site), Northamptonshire, between 21st June and 12th August 2021. The Site was located to the south of Welsh Road within the Greatworth to Lower Boddington Community Forum Area (CFA15, Figure 1), with the north-western boundary of the Site marking the county boundary with Warwickshire (NGR centre 446854, 252857). The Site comprised a single landholding (NN314415) measuring 0.3ha designated as C32087. Previous archaeological works comprised geophysical surveys in 2018-19 (Part 1; 1EW03-FUSEV-REP-CS07_CL14-007768) and in 2020 (Part 2; 1EW03-FUS_CNA-EV-REP-S07_CL14-000003), and Archaeological Trial Trenching (1EW03-FUS_MHI-EV-REP-CS07_CL14-000009) undertaken in 2021. The Archaeological Trial Trenching targeted both previously identified geophysical anomalies and a sample of blank areas across the Site, and identified features of archaeological interest, including several Iron Age/ Roman ring-ditches/ enclosures and associated linear features. Across the Site medieval and post-medieval ridge and furrow was observed. Consistent with the previous geophysical survey and trial trenching work, the Archaeological Recording identified activity dating primarily from the middle to late Iron Age period. The presence of the D-shaped enclosure, ring-ditch and partial ring-ditches were confirmed with middle to late Iron Age pottery recovered from the respective fills. A possible partial enclosure system defined by ditches, truncating earlier ring-ditch features, suggests a later phase of activity. The artefactual assemblage recovered from the ditches indicates a broadly mid to late Iron Age date for this activity. This Post-Excavation Assessment (PXA) is presented in two sections as required by the HS2 Post Excavation Assessment Guidance Document no: HS2-HS2-EV-GDE-000-000027, Part A Factual Report, Part B Assessment of Potential; and Appendices.
