Abstract/Summary

Smith Aggregates and Builders Merchants Ltd commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on land at Passenham Quarry Southern Extension, Northamptonshire, which will be undertaken to support a forthcoming planning application for a quarry extension. The site lies in an area with of potential archaeological interest with a fair amount of prehistoric and Roman archaeology uncovered within the current extent of Passenham Quarry. The survey has revealed very little of archaeological interest. There is a short positive linear feature in the northern field which could represent a former ditch or drainage feature. The survey also revealed the modern cultivation trend, as well as potential ill-defined features which could represent the remains of ridge and furrow. A former field boundary was also identified within the southern field. Linear magnetic areas in the survey results corresponded to the trackways across the site, and small amorphous positive features as well as curvilinear positive features likely represent geological variation within the site.
