Abstract/Summary
Archaeological monitoring and recording of groundworks for a swimming pool was undertaken on land at Garden Farmhouse, Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire. This was because the site lies in an area of known archaeological potential within the historic core of the village, immediately northeast of the castle, and east of a medieval inn. The monitoring and recording revealed a layer of decayed vegetation which was sealed by an early 19th century redeposited natural deposit, probably related to clearance for early 19th century extension work. In the north side of the trench this was overlain by sand and gravel layers and, in the south side, was cut by probable garden terracing, also of 19th century date. Finds comprised pottery dating from the Late Saxon period to the early 20th century, roof tile, brick, animal bone, clay pipe, iron and glass.
