Title | APETHORPE PALACE; ARCHAEOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS DURING DRAINAGE UPGRADE |
Author/Originator | Joe Prentice |
Date/Year | 2024 |
Abstract/Summary
Observations during works to upgrade the drainage system on the north and west sides of the palace were undertaken at the request of the owners, the Baron and Baroness von Pfetten. The works did not require statutory consent but were requested by the owners in order to provide a record of groundworks such as had been undertaken previously. The installation of the new drainage was prompted by a series of flooding events which had occurred over the previous three years and caused considerable damage to elements of the palace and its contents. The new drainage was connected into an existing stone-built culvert system and was located in an area which had previously been heavily disturbed by the installation of services during the twentieth-century. Apart from the early stone-built culvert, no archaeological features were observed. The extent of the modern destruction has been recorded, identifying areas where future installations may be safely considered if, or when, they might be required.
