Abstract/Summary
Magnitude Surveys was commissioned to assess the subsurface archaeological potential of a c18.8ha block of land at Elm Tree Farm, Northamptonshire. A fluxgate gradiometer survey was successfully completed across the survey area. In the majority of the survey area, a spread of ferrous debris has been identified that exhibits the characteristics of of green waste. This spread might be masking more ephemeral anomalies of anthropogenic origin if present. In the rest of the survey area, both probable and posssible archaeological activity has been identified, with anomalies of linear and curvilinear morphology suggestive of an enclosure complex. Agricultural features including ridge and furrow cultivation and former mapped and unmapped field boundaries have also been identified. Some anomalies classified as 'undetermined' were identified within the survey area and archaeological interpretations for these cannot be excluded. The impact of modern activity on the site is limited to magnetic interference around field perimeters and telegraph poles.
