Title | An Archaeological Strip, Map & Record Excavation at Elms Farm, 6 Church Street, Crick, Northamptonshire |
Author/Originator | Roger Kipling |
Date/Year | 2022 |
Abstract/Summary
This report details the results of an archaeological strip, map and sample excavation carried out by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) at Elms Farm, 6 Church Street, Crick, Northamptonshire NN6 7TP (NGR: SP 58821 72544). The work was undertaken in September 2022 on behalf of Hammond Town Planning during groundworks associated with the construction of a new dwelling and following demolition of a modern barn. The site lies within the historic settlement core and conservation area of the medieval village of Crick and contains some of the last remaining earthworks relating to the medieval village. Documentary sources suggests that the earthworks represent areas abandoned during the 14th century The northern part of the present development area was excavated by ULAS in 2017, revealing settlement activity from the 12th-13th centuries as well as an isolated Bronze Age cremation burial. These remains were interpreted as representative of activity to the rear of properties fronting on to Church Street. The strip, map and sample excavation to the immediate south of this, provided further evidence of medieval activity in the form of a possible property boundary ditch and attendant pit and post hole. The archive for the project will be deposited with Northamptonshire Museums Service with the accession number ENN110640.
