Abstract/Summary
CFA Archaeology Ltd was commissioned by Bison Construction to undertake a Level 2 historic building record of the Former Brook Blouse Factory at 64-72 Roe Road, Northampton. The survey was required prior to redevelopment of the factory into dwellings. The Former Brook Blouse Factory was constructed in the early 20th century in the place of earlier terraced housing. The Building was likely constructed to utilise electricity for the machinery and had an early 20th century heating and cooling systems within the walls. The Building is comprised of brick, steel I-beams, and with an unusual roof shape supported by large timber attic trusses. The Building was initially designed to allow for a vehicle to enter the northern side of the building and provided access to the basement through a low opening and floor hatch. By the later half of the 20th century this appears to have been made redundant and the former northern yard was infilled by a northern extension. Throughout the building were later 20th century cladding and refurbishment efforts. Prior to the survey the building was utilised as a printing business, offices, and at least one dwelling.
