Abstract/Summary

AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Neo Environmental Ltd to undertake an archaeological geophysical survey using the magnetic gradiometry method to investigate the potential for buried archaeological remains of an area of land at Newnham Grange, Daventry, Northamptonshire (SP 59769 61817).The survey area was located 2.75km ESE of the centre of Daventry and comprised 19.5 ha of arable land within a single field, of which 17.2 ha were surveyed; the remainder could not be surveyed due crop/dense vegetation.A number of curvilinear anomalies have been detected that have been tentatively interpreted as being of possible archaeological origin, although they may relate to historical agricultural activity or natural features.Various anomalies have also been identified across the survey area that are insufficiently distinctive to confidently determine their origin. While an archaeological origin cannot be ruled out, they are likely to reflectnatural geological variation or agricultural activity. Anomalies of agricultural origin include those reflecting former field boundaries, land drains and ploughing.Modern services have been detected running along the field boundary. Magnetic disturbance associated with modern ferrous sources is largely restricted to the field edges.
