Abstract/Summary

A programme of historic building recording was undertaken ahead of conversion work being carried out at 66 Main Street, Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire, on behalf of Mr and Mrs Wood. The house is a Grade II Listed Building, largely of 18th-century date. The building was constructed in two main phases, with a house on the street frontage later being extended with a north wing on the east side of the building. During the second half of the 19th century a stone outbuilding with slate roof was built adjacent to the north wing. The latter is constructed with different stone coursing to the frontage building and appears to have originally had large windows. In the 18th century the house was occupied by Thomas Pinfold, a noted clock maker, and it is suggested here that the rear wing may have been erected as a workshop. At some point the building was subdivided into two cottages. In 1965 the two structures were referred to as ‘Clock Cottages’ on architects’ plans and were subsequently converted to a single dwelling by knocking through walls at first-floor level. Work also involved change of use to rooms, blocking or altering fireplaces, replacement of the majority of the windows and introduction of indoor toilets etc. In 1986 the house was re-thatched and almost all the roof timbers were replaced with modern wood.
