Abstract/Summary

In April 2007, ARCUS were commissioned by Anglian Water to conduct a desk-based assessment along the course of a proposed pipeline between Thorpe Mandeville and Greatworth, Northamptonshire (SP 521 443 to SP 568 422. The assessment, which comprised a walk-over survey, along with documentary and cartographic research, indicates that there are 29 known or potential archaeological sites within a search area extending for 500m on either side of the pipeline route. The sites range in date from the prehistoric period through to the 19th century and include burial sites, potential settlement sites, individual find-spots and former industrial sites. The majority of the proposed pipeline route follows the course of the B4525. Most of the archaeological sites are located away from the route and will not be affected. However, four sites have the potential to be impacted directly by the pipeline; detailed design of the route should therefore avoid the archaeological sites where possible. Additional sites may be affected should the proposed works take place within fields adjacent to the B4525, rather than along the course of the road itself. The proposed pipeline should therefore adhere to the course of the road where possible. Mitigation proposals have been outlined for specific sites along the route
