Title Barrel-vaulted staircases in England and on the Continent, with special reference to Brixworth Church, Northamptonshire
Author/Originator
Date/Year 1978

Abstract/Summary

The stair turret attached to the W tower at Brixworth has its treads supported by a helical barrel vault of rubble. A review of English and Continental parallels suggests a date no earlier than 11th or even 12th century; the very uniqueness of Brixworth constitutes a typological problem.
