Abstract/Summary

Archaeological trial trenching was undertaken on land to the north-west of Warren Close, Gretton, Northamptonshire in order to provide information to meet the requirements of a condition attached to the planning permission granted under the reference NC/23/00052/DPA. The site lies within an area of moderate to high archaeological potential, close to the historic core of the village of Gretton. In consequence, to provide information on the archaeological potential of the site, the local planning authority requested the implementation of a programme of trial trench evaluation in accordance with advice provided by the North Northamptonshire Council Planning Archaeologist. The earliest feature is a possible Saxon posthole, in the north-west of the site. The trial trenching also revealed several postholes which may have formed part of a medieval wooden structure towards the north of the site. A possible associated refuse pit was excavated nearby. A later medieval pit containing a near whole pot alongside a large portion of a second pot was also seen in the north of the site. To the south-east, possible limestone extraction pits were identified, one of which contained later 15th century pottery. Two ditches which match boundaries seen on 19th century mapping were also seen.
