Abstract/Summary

Heritage Archaeology has been commissioned to provide a historic environment assessment for a proposed battery energy storage system on land at Braybrooke, Northamptonshire. The only recorded heritage asset within the Site is an area of ridge and furrow (evidence for medieval or post medieval ploughing) that can be seen in aerial photographs from the mid-20th century but no longer survives as an earthwork. The Site is however adjacent to an area of prehistoric, Roman and early medieval activity identified during excavations in advance of the construction of the Braybrooke Substation. Geophysical survey has identified anomalies of ‘probably archaeology’ within the Site. The Site therefore has potential for previously unknown archaeology to be present. The Site is not within the settings of any heritage assets, given their locations relative to the Site, the distance of separation and intervening topography and mature trees. This includes the conservation area, scheduled monuments and listed buildings within Braybrooke village which is approximately 1km to the south east of the Site.
