SNN117055 - Witham Archaeology Report No. 447: Cottages at 1 – 3 Sudborough Road, Slipton, Northamptonshire: Historic Building Recording

This report presents the results of a programme of Historic Building Recording carried out in advance of renovations to Grade II Listed cottages at 1 – 3 Sudborough Road, Slipton, Northamptonshire. The project was commissioned by Ross Thain Architects on behalf the Drayton Estate, to fulfil the requirements of a condition attached to Listed Building Consent granted by East Northamptonshire District Council (Ref. 20/00338/LBC). The Assistant Archaeological Adviser, Northamptonshire County Council, had requested the compilation of a photographic record to Historic England Level 1 prior to any alteration of the structure. The cottages appear to have originated as a single house in the eighteenth century but were probably split into three dwellings in the nineteenth century. Numbers 1 and 2 were later formed into a single dwelling with number 3 remaining as a separate entity. The building, which is constructed in limestone and formerly with a thatched roof, sustained severe damage in 2018, resulting in the loss of much of the original fabric (including the roof) at first floor. The cottages are shown on the 1886 First Edition County map. The results of the survey indicate that the building was probably constructed as a single dwelling with three downstairs rooms, two arranged to either side of the main chimney stack and the third situated to the north of a possible east to west through passage. The upstairs rooms were largely destroyed by the fire but fragmentary evidence of the original layout was recorded.
