Abstract/Summary

Archaeological mitigation was undertaken by MOLA on land at the site of St Mary’s Court and Berkeley House, Horse Market, Northampton. The works were carried out on behalf of Northampton Partnership Homes in advance of the construction of affordable housing and associated works. The scope of works were agreed with the archaeological Advisor at West Northamptonshire Council and set out in the Written Scheme of Investigation (MOLA 2021b). The areas of mitigation by open area comprised three trenches in the eastern area of St Mary’s Court (North) and an L-shaped area in the north-eastern corner of Berkeley House (South). Overburden and modern deposits were removed by machine under archaeological supervision, and archaeological deposits were hand excavated. Once these had been fully recorded further periodic machine excavation was undertaken to reveal the underlying deposits and remains, with the agreement of the Archaeological Advisor. Recording was undertaken using MOLA standard procedures. Artefacts were retrieved and stored under guidance for specialist analysis
