SNN117156 - Stanwick Quarry, Northamptonshire. Raunds Area Project: Glass and amber beads from the Stanwick excavations

The excavations at Stanwick, Northamptonshire, were carried out by Historic England in advance of gravel extraction. Trenching covered over 30 hectares and the resulting assemblage of finds and bioarchaeological material remains the largest archaeological collection from the county. The fieldwork revealed a prehistoric ritual landscape and field systems succeeded by rural settlement dating from the early Iron Age through the Romano-British period. Activity at the villa continued into the fifth century AD. There are over 11,500 registered finds from the excavations, and this report describes 98 glass and three amber beads. The earliest were probably originally made in the second to first centuries BC and the latest in the fifth century AD. Sixty were associated with an early Anglo-Saxon inhumation and the remainder were found during the excavation of the settlement.
