SNN117158 - Stanwick Quarry, Northamptonshire. Raunds Area Project: The Romano-British Intaglios and Ring-settings from Stanwick

Extensive excavations at Stanwick, Northamptonshire (SP972716) were carried out in advance of gravel extraction between 1984 and 1992. They form the major part of the Iron Age and Romano-British element of the Raunds Area Project. The report describes eighteen items: intaglios, ring-settings and a disc brooch imitative of intaglio-set brooches. The assemblage is typical of low quality intaglios and trinket rings of the end of the 2nd and of the 3rd century A.D. The rings were the sort of low quality jewellery worn by people of low status who nevertheless wished to ape the fashions of the beau monde. The exception is the eagle intaglio, an item which belongs to a higher social milieu and is also earlier in date; it might have belonged to a soldier or an official of the Roman state.
