SNN117210 - Updated Project Design and Post-Excavation Assessment for archaeological trial trenching and mitigation at Area 19, Stanton Cross SUE, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, May to December 2024

Between May and December 2024 MOLA undertook archaeological trial trench evaluation and excavation on land parcel Area 19, Stanton Cross Sustainable Urban Extension Area (SUE), Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. The fieldwork was undertaken at the same time as excavation on Area 54/76, which has been reported on separately. The archaeological remains included part of a prehistoric pit alignment, middle to late Iron Age enclosures and pits. Two ring ditches forming roundhouse eavesdrip gullies were also present. Activity expanded across the site during the Roman period and was defined by a Roman road with roadside ditches. Respecting the position of the road were field systems and enclosures. Within one of the enclosures was an area of multiple intercutting pits. Medieval activity comprised the remnants of furrows relating to the Open Field System, with post-medieval to modern land drains and disturbance also present. Notable artefacts included middle to late Iron Age and early Roman pottery. Fired clay derived from a probable kiln was also recovered as well as material that has been tentatively identified as a sword-mould.
