Abstract/Summary
Between January and November 2025, KDK Archaeology Ltd undertook a programme of Monitoring and Recording at Barns South of Marston Road (Stone Green), Thenford, Northamptonshire. Despite lying within an extensive archaeological landscape that encompasses an Iron Age and Romano-British settlement with a Roman villa, now a Scheduled Monument immediately adjacent to the development site, no archaeological finds, features or deposits were found within any of the groundworks. The service trench that was excavated from the barn to Marston Road, close to the eastern boundary of the Scheduled Monument was heavily affected by tree roots and only just breached the top of the natural geology. It is possible that any surviving remains were undisturbed by the excavation. The area to the south of the barn had already been disturbed by previous and recent works, but there was no indication of archaeological survival in any form in the areas that were monitored. Whether this is due to a paucity of features within the study area or that any surviving remains had been disturbed during the construction and subsequent use of the barn and its yard is impossible to say.
