Abstract/Summary
This research was carried out to place on record the post-medieval evidence of the Northampton urban landscape on the west side of town, and represents part of a broader study of the post-medieval framework of the medieval town. The use of post-medieval records to understand earlier development avoids over-reliance on old maps, such as in Northampton's case Speed's map of 1610, which is really a vignette for an early county map and of questionable accuracy. It is also important for Northampton because re-planning after the great Fire of 1675 limits the value of 18th-century town maps.
