Abstract/Summary
An evaluation was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of deveLopment of land off London Road, Wollaston, Northamptonshire. A desktop assessment of documentary sources and known archaeological remains in proximity to the application area was undertaken. The survey attested the archaeological importance of the Wollaston area from the Neolithic period onwards. The desktop assessment indicated that the evaluation area has been largely open ground since the mid eighteenth century except for strip buildings fronting London Road and with a linear building to the rear. The archaeological trial trenches revealed the existence of a number of post-medieval features, including a well, adjacent to the street frontage. A number of archaeological features were located in the western side of the application area, in Trench 1. The finds included sherds of pottery from the Roman period onwards. The pottery sherds are residual and included a single Roman period sherd and ten early to middle Saxon handmade pieces. The pottery assemblage attests to the existence of activity of the Roman, Saxon and medieval periods within, or adjacent to, the application area.
