Abstract/Summary

Seven trial trenches were excavated on land to the south of the Roman Town on 4th December 1997. They identified no substantial archaeological remains. Trenches 1-5, located in field OS Parcel 7132, confirmed the limits of modern ironstone quarrying suggested by the geophysical survey, carried out in September 1997. A further trench, in Irchester Country Park, revealed a continuation of the ironstone quarries and another located between the existing and the former A45 contained the heavily truncated remains of a pit or vegetation hollow.
