Abstract/Summary

An archaeological assessment has been undertaken by John Samuels Archaeological Consultants in connection with a proposed development at Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit, Silverstone, Northamptonshire on behalf of Silverstone Estates Ltd. The assessment comprised a desk top study of recorded information from archival sources, publications, a site visit and geophysical survey. The area of proposed development lies to the south of Silverstone village, on the south side of the A43 trunk road. Historically it has been woodland, and latterly in agricultural, military and leisure use, there is no recorded evidence of archaeological remains on the site. However, its setting within the area of the former Royal Forest of Whittlewood may have potential for archaeological remains related to woodland industries. In the light of the results of the geophysical survey, it is concluded that no further evaluation is necessary.
