Abstract/Summary

The following notes represent a preliminary analysis of fieldwork and documentary research carried out by RCHME in 1997. All of the surviving buildings were examined, though continuing use (at varying levels of intensity) meant that internal observation was ruled out or restricted in some buildings. The present interim report covers all the buildings still standing within the complex, with the exception of canal gates and the buildings in the magazine compound. The full report will in due course address the site in its totality (including reference to the associated Barracks and Hospital), and will include a full historical introduction assessing the site’s national significance, an account of the overall site organisation, and sections dealing with the site phase by phase. It will also incorporate coverage of the magazine compound, buildings beyond the perimeter of the complex, and principal buildings no longer standing. An extensive photographic record of the site (covering all the early 19th century buildings surviving at that time) was made by RCHME shortly after closure by the MoD in 1965; extracts form this coverage will be used in the full report, supplemented by more recent photography.
