Abstract/Summary

The evidence demonstrates that a large part of the development area is situated upon made-up ground comprised of demolition material derived from medieval/post medieval structures that presumably once stood in the vicinity. Concealed and undisturbed beneath these layers, lay an old ground surface. Further machine excavation through the buried topsoil revealed a large, waterlogged rock-cut feature, from which medieval artefacts were recovered. This is believed to have been a medieval water feature of anthropogenic origin-either a moat or a pond. Artefacts recovered from above the water feature dated from high to late medieval periods.
