Abstract/Summary

Archaeological evaluation comprising desk-based assessment, earthwork survey and trial excavation was carried out ahead the proposed construction of a single dwelling on land fronting Main Street, Thurning. The study largely confirmed the earthwork survey by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments England which consisted of a moated site set within a larger rectangular enclosure and a area of possible settlement remains along Main Street. Excavation close to the street reveaLed a series of ditches and a metalled surface which did not follow the earthwork alignments. The features were dated to the thirteenth-fourteenth centuries.
