Description

House. Dated 1724 and 1729 extended late C18 for Earl of Exeter to form house and attached school-room. Squared coursed limestone with Collyweston slate roof. Originally 2-unit plan now with cross wing to right. Single storey, part with attic. 2-window range of C19 style casements under wood lintels. Pair of gabled eaves dormers with similar casements. Plasterwork gables have dates inscribed. Central, 6-panel, door with diamond-shape glazed toplight, wood lintel and flat wooden hood. Stone stack at ridge, to right. Gabled cross-wing breaks forward, to right, and has large C19 style casement under C20 wood lintel. 2 eaves dormers and various C19 style windows to rear. Interior not inspected. The cross-wing was originally added as a school-room when the house became a schoolmasters residence in the late C18. (RCHM: An Inventory of Architectural Monuments in North Northamptonshire: p55)
