Summary

A cross wing house that is located on the western side of Church Street. The building is constructed of coursed limestone with a double pitched Collyweston slate roof with a stone ridge chimney stack to the centre right. The house is single story with an attic floor lit by four gabled eaves dormer windows, two on the entrance facade and two at the rear of the house. The entrance facade has a two window range of casements under wooden lintels that are divided by a door with a flat timber hood. The gable of the cross wing breaks forward on the right and has a large casement window on the ground floor. The gables display plaques dated 1724 and 1729. The building became a schoolmasters residence with a classroom in the late 18th century.

Full Description

{1} House. Dated 1724 and 1729 extended late C18 for Earl of Exeter to form house and attached school-room. Squared coursed limestone with Collyweston slate roof. Originally 2-unit plan now with cross wing to right. Single storey, part with attic. 2-window range of C19 style casements under wood lintels. Pair of gabled eaves dormers with similar casements. Plasterwork gables have dates inscribed. Central, 6-panel, door with diamond-shape glazed toplight, wood lintel and flat wooden hood. Stone stack at ridge, to right. Gabled cross-wing breaks forward, to right, and has large C19 style casement under C20 wood lintel. 2 eaves dormers and various C19 style windows to rear. Interior not inspected. The cross-wing was originally added as a school-room when the house became a schoolmasters residence in the late C18.
