Description

List Entry Description Summary of Building First World War memorial, 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. Reasons for Designation Weldon’s war memorial, standing in the village centre, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20; * Architect: designed by the renowned Northamptonshire architect JA Gotch; * Design: a sturdy limestone obelisk. History The memorial, to commemorate servicemen from the village who fell during the First World War, was constructed in 1920. It was commissioned from JA Gotch. Plaques to commemorate those who fell during the Second World War were added later. Details The war memorial stands on a small green at a road junction in the village centre. Overall c5m high, it comprises a simple limestone obelisk set on a tapering, square, plinth, which stands on a three-stage octagonal base. A narrow gravel path runs around this, defined by a limestone edging. Attached to the plinth, a bronze plaque with raised lettering reads TO THE/ MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF WELDON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE WAR OF/ 1914-1919. The names of those who fell, by year, are recorded on similar plaques to the remaining sides. Plaques in the same style at the base of the obelisk record those who fell 1939-1945. The memorial stands in a small garden defined by a modern post and chain fence. That is not included in the listing.
