Listed Building: Church of St. Andrew (21/37)

Church. Late C13, C14. Chancel remodelled by Sir. G.G.Scott c1851. Squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and Colleyweston slate and lead roof. Aisled nave, chancel, vestry/organ chamber, west tower and south porch. South elevation of chancel of two-window range of 2- and 3-light Perpendicular windows with transoms, cuspings and 4-centred arch heads. Window to left has low-side sill. Small C20 priest door between windows has roll moulded head and one order of shafts, probably reset. Shallow gable roof with plain ashlar parapet and finial. 5-light Perpendicular west window with transoms, cusping and 4-centred arch head. North elevation of chancel has one 2-light Perpendicular to left, similar to south elevation. C19 gabled vestry and organ chamber breaks forward to right. 2-light north window. Similar window, in return wall, has priest door to right. Steeply gabled roof has Colleyweston slates and ashlar gable parapets. South aisle of 3 bays, 2-window range of 2-light squared head windows with hood moulds and carved label stops, to left and right. Small single-light window to far right. Shallow 2 stage buttresses at corners. Lean-to roof with plain ashlar parapets and short finials at corners. Single lancet east window and 2-light west window, both with cusping. Central gabled porch has 2-centred outer arch with 3 hollows and nail head decoration. Cluster shaft responds. Inner doorway has roll moulded arch with 2 rows of nail head decoration and 2 orders of shafts. Steeply gabled roof with Colleyweston slates, ashlar gable parapets and finials to both gables. North aisle of 4 bays. 3-window range of 2-light windows. Window to left has tracery circle with 3 spherical triangles, others have quatrefoils in the tracery. North doorway to right of centre has 2 orders of shafts, moulded arch and foliated frieze on line of capitals. Nave clerestory of 3-window range of 2-light windows with elongated quatrefoils. Shallow gabled roof with moulded corble table, plain ashlar parapet, finial and gargoyles to far left and right. West tower of 3 stages with plinth at base. Unbuttressed. West door has moulded arch head with 3 orders of shafts. 2-light window above, Window in south face of second stage has an outer and inner band of nailhead decoration and a central moulded band. 2-light bell-chamber openings to each face of upper stage have fine dog-tooth decoration. Polygonal stair turret to south-east corner is corbelled at base. Ashlar broach spire with 3 tiers of lucarnes. Interior: 3-bay nave arcade of double chamfered arches, with quatrefoil piers and cluster shaft responds. One plain circular pier to west of north archade. Double-chamfered chancel arch with clusters of 3 short colonettes supported on corbels. Triple-chamfered tower arch dying into the impost. C19 double-chamfered arch from chancel to organ chamber. Tower ceiling is rib vaulted. Perpendicular chancel roof with some original moulded cross beams. Some original roof timbers in aisle roofs, restored C20 and some carvings reset in C20 tie beam of north aisle. Chancel roof has moulded purlins. Tripartite reredos in east wall of north aisle has ogee headed arches, with wider central arch. Trefoil-head inner arches with foliated decoration. Decorated frieze above. Perpendicular niches flanking east window of south aisle with canopied heads. Remains of rood loft stair to left. Plain piscina in wall to right. Double sedilia to right of chancel altar has flat ogee arch heads. Jacobean pulpil. C19 furnishings. Octagonal font with trefoil-head decoration, on reset base. Stained glass, fragments of medieval glass in west tower window and in tracery of 2 north aisle windows. C19 stained glass to chancel windows, vestry window one north aisle and 2 south aisle windows. Monuments: Christopher Freeman, died 1610; brass plate with semi-kneeling figures, to the right of altar. Rev. Nicholas Latham died 1620. Demi-figure to right of altar, in arch head niche with inscribed panel, scrolls an armorial device above. Mid C19 tablet in vestry to Oddie family. C20 wall plaques in chancel to H.R.H. Henry Duke of Gloucester and in north aisle to H.R.H. Prince William of Gloucester. (Buildings of England: North Northamptonshire: p101)
