Description

Manor house. Early C16, altered C18 and c.1860. Coursed limestone rubble; stone slate roof; brick chimneys. L-plan, originally U-plan, but east wing burnt down in C18 and centre and west wing remain. 2 storeys and attic; 3 bays. Doorway to left of the south front has a stone 4-centred arch and plank door. Lean-to stone porch c.1920. 2 stone mullioned windows of 2- and 4-arched lights with square hoods to right. Similar 4-light window in centre of first floor, flanked by 2-light window on either side. Projecting gabled wing of one bay to west of two storeys and attic with stone mullioned windows of 4, 3 and 2 arched lights and square hoods. On the west side of this wing is a massive chimney with three C19 brick stacks and left of it a gabled projection of c.1860 of 2 storeys and attic. West front re-fenestrated c.1860. At the rear is a C19 kitchen wing of one storey. Interior: Hall to right of entrance has an early C16 stone fireplace with a 4-centred arch and ceiling with two intersecting chamfered beams. The first floor room above the hall has a similar fireplace and original painted decoration on the walls with red and white stripes and chequer pattern frieze. A room left of the hall has wooden bolection panelling of c.1720. Further north in the west wing is a former kitchen with an open fireplace and early C18 stone segmental arch, partly renewed in brick. (G.
