Description
House. Datestone 1862. Probably by E.F. Law for William Mackworth-Dolben. Ironstone ashlar with slate and pantile roof. L-shape plan. 2 storeys. Elevation abutting Stocks Hill of 2-window range with cross wing to right. Door opening to left is now 2-light stone-mullion window. 4-light stone-mullion window to first floor right has 3 coats of arms at head; all enclosed by stepped drip mould and set in arched recess. Ashlar gable parapets with kneelers and stone stacks with cornices at ends. Inscription Thingdon Cottage" to left. Left gable has trefoil with central V inscribed. Single storey, 3-window range to left has one 2-light stone-mullion window and 2-stage buttress. Elevation to right is similar style with 2- and 3-light stone-mullion windows with small gable above that at first floor. Rear elevation also is similar style with arch head openings at ground floor and 2- and 3-light stone-mullion windows. First floor windows have gables over and first floor of cross wing has corbelled gable end. Double niche on return wall of cross wing with detached central column. Various coats of arms and carved heads as label stops. Interior not inspected. C19 ironstone wall attached to north abutting Stocks Hill has part ashlar coping and one square pier.
