Description

The Ise Archaeological Research Society undertook a major field survey in Cow Close Field over the period of 2-4 April 1999. This was to try and establish the occupation in the area of the Bath House which is situated to the south in Goose Holme. The brief for the Easter Bank Holiday was: to record all building debris, animal bone, pottery sherds and signs of burning. To recover all pottery and animal bone. Where feasible, to recover examples of building material such as worked stone and tesserae. Since a preliminary sortie had defined a concentration within the north and east of Cow Close Field it was decided to concentrate all efforts within this zone, an area c.40m x 30m. The conditions were good, it being overcast, and earlier heavy rain had degenerated the ploughsoil considerably.
