Full Description

{1} The majority of pottery recovered has been identified as Romano-British (with a small amount of medieval and post medieval). Pottery was recovered from the full range of the Romano-British period (more discussion presented).
Some worked stone was noted, but left in-situ. Two types of slate were recognised, one a grey slate, the other cream (and similar to Collyweston slate).
A vast quantity of tile was noted, the majority being box flue tile, with a smaller percentage of roof tile.
Opus signimum deposits were recorded.
During the survey a small amount of tesserae were recorded, the majority red, with a smaller proportion of white.
Remnants of glass were also recovered, some of which was probably Victorian in origin.
Each grid was also systematically surveyed by metal detector, but no artefacts were recovered, possibly due to the high quantity of ironstone and iron slag in the field. Detecting which was continued outside the main survey area did however recover two artefacts, a lead plumb bob from SP84898331 and a brass horse harness buckle from SP84928329.
The survey revealed that the area of Cow Close Field has seen continual usage from at least the late Iron Age through to the present day. The evidence of the building debris indicates a Romano-British structure in this area.
