Description

Trial trenches were positioned in order to sample land adjacent to the Roman road and to define the limit of features (side ditches) associated with the road. Initially three locations for trial trenches were proposed. Trenches I and II were positioned in an area where a diversion of a watercourse is planned . Trench III was positioned to sample land adjacent to the Roman road, at the southern end of the proposed development, where a cutting for railway sidings is planned. A further trench, Trench IV, was excavated close to Trench II, but on slightly higher ground, to increase the sample as Trench I could not be excavated because of waterlogged conditions. Site code: R2528B
