Description

Trial trenching, undertaken in November 2004, comprised the excavation of eighteen trenches. A number of substantial stone-lined drains were located which may relate to the quarrying operation. Three undated gullies were also found. One of these may be the remnant of a field boundary removed in the latter half of the 20th century. The other two could be related to late 19th-century drainage. As indicated by the geophysical survey, alluvial deposits were encountered in the southwestern corner of the site. The only find was a fragment of a Neolithic flint blade (c4000-2400 BC) recovered from topsoil.
