Description

{1} SLP Consulting on behalf of William Davis Homes commissioned Northamptonshire Archaeology to undertake archaeological mitigation work on the proposed development site on land off Booth Rise, Northampton (NGR SP7871064740). The works were required as mitigation following geophysical survey (Souterrain 2012) and trial trench evaluation (MetroMOLA 2012) in response to a planning application for residential development. The site was exacavated in two phases because of an active badger sett towards the south-eastern corner. Whilst the first phase of open area excavation was in progress the badger sett was removed and seven 20m long evaluation trenches were opened in the previously protected area to the south-east of the site. The south-eastern part of the site (c.0.5ha) was then included in the main excavation area on the basis of the evaluation results. NB The site was perforated by rows of regularly spaced pits deriving from the use of the land as a temporary tree nursery in the 1960s.
