Abstract/Summary

Between September 2012 and January 2013 Northamptonshire Archaeology (now trading as MOLA Northampton) carried out an archaeological excavation on land at Booth Rise, Northampton. Part of an early Romano-British low status rural settlement was uncovered as well as a small number of late Iron Age pits and early Anglo-Saxon settlement. The ditch systems were constructed in the early 1st century AD and were maintained and modified through to the middle to late 2nd century AD when the area was abandoned. They formed a series of paddocks or enclosures likely to be associated with stock management and small scale arable production and processing. No structures were encountered but the relatively large pottery assemblages often comprising large unabraded sherds, a burial and a pottery kiln indicate that domestic structures, possibly with little below ground impact, were nearby.
