Description

{1} Archaeological investigation and recording during groundworks for extensions to the dwelling at No. 21 Northampton Road, Yardley Hastings. The objectives were to ensure that the archaeological interest of the site was safeguarded and recover information that may contribute to understanding of medieval land use and settlement at Yardley Hastings. The investigation took place about 20m east of a medieval kiln which was excavated in 1979. Ground works comprised ground reduction in the back garden and on the west side of the property. This also involved removal of the foundations of a modern brick-built structure attached ot the west side of the existing house and the concrete and rubble base of a C20th conservatory alongside the south of the building. Following the breaking out of concrete with a toothed bucket, all soil stripping was carried out by mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket. The overall area of ground reduction was approximately 112sq.m. and archaeological visibility was good throughout. Remains of at least one timber structure, represented by a beam trench and postholes/settings, dated to the 13th century and are probably associated with the remains of kiln excavated in 1979 20m away. The removal of rubble foundations on the south side of the existing building showed that the ground had been truncated; there were no archaeological features in this area.
