Description

This analysis of Abbey School buildings, Market Square, Daventry has been researched by CgMs Consulting on behalf of Daventry District Council. The buildings are not listed but situated within the town centre Conservation Area, are included within a development site currently proposed for sheltered housing. The report comprises a description and historical development, a review of national and local plan policy, an assessment of the intrinsic historical interest of the building and assessment of its contribution to the Conservation Area. The buildings of the former Abbey School are located off the north side of Market Square; those subject of this analysis are set back off the frontage to one side and to the rear of other related buildings (the ex-serviceman’s club). To the front and west the subject buildings face onto areas of hard standing and to the west overlook Abbey Street from an elevated position. To the north and north-east the buildings overlook the cemetery area associated with Holy Cross Church.
