Description

{2} As part of work associated with the compilation of the 2005 management documents, magnetometer survey was carried out on the floodplain island to the north of the walled town. There was no evidence of the major north-south routeway, suggesting that it may have been removed by river channel activity. In addition areas to the immediate west and south of Chester Farm were surveyed. Here the elements of the defensive ditch system flanking the eastern walls of the town, an adjacent minor route and at least two extramural ditched enclosures were identified. There was also extensive evidence for medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. A sample area within the walled town was also surveyed producing outstanding results in which individual buildings could be identified along with some internal details.
